Are Your Employees Wasting Time On The Internet?
According to a study conducted by AOL and Salary.com, the American employees waste more than two hours of their working time.
The average employee admitted to spending 2.09 hours per day online, not
counting lunch, said the survey, more than double the 1 hour per day that corporate resource managers actually expected.
The top time-wasting activity, according to the survey, was surfing the Internet for personal use. More than 44 percent of those polled said they browsed the Web, sent personal e-mail, engaged in non-work instant messaging, or played online games during work hours. The second-biggest time waster, socializing with co-workers, came in at just 23 percent.
Although the wasted time difference between men and women was negligible, there was a definite split between older and younger workers.
Employees born during the height of the Baby Boom generation (1950-59), for instance, admitted to blowing just .7 hours per day, while the youngest workers, those born from 1980-85, said they wasted a full 2 hours a day.
"A certain amount of slacking off is already built into the salary structure," said Bill Coleman, senior vice president at Salary.com. "Our survey results show that workers on average are wasting a little more than twice what their employers expect. That's a startling figure."
